Amazing Views from Rooftop Gardens

amazing views from rooftop gardens in san francisco

If you're a photographer or city explorer after breathtaking panoramic views, you should know about POPOS, or privately owned public open spaces. As a part of a San Francisco initiative, building developers are required to provide public access spaces. With lounge chairs and dinning tables, these spots are a peaceful lunch oasis for packed meals. Come outside of lunch hours for a more private experience that will leave you feeling closer to nature while surrounded by iconic San Francisco architecture. Here's 5 public access spaces all situated atop roofs and spruced up with gardens.

1. Crocker Galleria

Filled with commercial businesses and specialty eateries, Crocker Galleria features a glass pavilion and rooftop garden. During the week until 3 pm, you can find a local farmer's market set at the entrance.

*These are rough hours and should be confirmed with the galleria. In my experience, the roof garden is not always open on Saturdays.

2. One Kearny Street

This hidden gem has roughly 2,500 square feet of public access space. The required sign is unnoticeably set at knee level, so this place is truly underutilized. Maybe that's why its a popular spot for boyfriends to become fiancés.

This roof offers a deliciously breathtaking view of the Transamerica Pyramid and the bay. Take one of six elevator up to the 15th floor to find tables surrounding a colorful sundial.

 4. Sun Terrace

Atop a parking garage in the SOMA district, this sun terrace has a sweeping panoramic view. Rippling water falls and avenues of trees line this patio, packed full, of lounge chairs and dinning tables. There aren't many lunch spots nearby, so come with a packed meal.

Wooden benches and coffee tables are set in the nooks of the tiered concrete planters spruced with grass, shrubs and trees. To access this location, take the street side staircase on Mission between 1st and 2nd street situated between the building and parking garage.
