Types of Watches

Watches have been around since the 16th century, and they've evolved from being used as a timekeeping device to a fashion accessory. There are watches that you wear to tell the time, watches that have a stopwatch feature watches with alarm clocks and watches with timers. Watches come in all different shapes and sizes from the traditional round face to rectangular or square ones. There are digital watches that show a date as well as a time. The types of watches available today are so varied it is hard to know what type would suit your needs best! In this article, we will discuss different types of watches that you may come across.

Different types of watches

Watches can be categorized by their design, size, style, and performance. Additionally, they can also be classified according to the era in which they were designed or manufactured. The first watches were bulky with large faces as only men wore them. However, they were not exactly fashion accessories, like we see today. Watches have evolved over the years and are now available in a variety of sizes, styles, and colours. There are watches for every occasion, from dress watches to sports watches to dive watches.

Different types of movements power watches. The most common type is the quartz movement, which uses a battery to power the watch. There are also mechanical and automatic movements, which use a rotor to wind the watch up. Some watches even have solar-powered movements.

We have listed down here are some of the most common types of watches:

Analogue watches

These watches are typically the watches we usually see. They have a small clock face, an hour hand, a minute hand and sometimes even a second hand. Around the hands, they have numbers displayed and they have markings for every hour.

Digital watches

Digital watches show the numeric representation of time, highlighting the hour, minute and second. Some watches even show milliseconds. They usually have other features as well such as stopwatches, timers and alarms.

Chronograph Watches

types of watches: chronograph

Chronograph watches
can be used to measure elapsed time, making them stopwatches. The chronograph function of the watch allows you to measure small intervals of time such as races.

Tachymeter Watches

Tachymeter watches measure speed. People often confuse these with chronograph watches. While chronograph watches are basically stop watches that measure time, tachymeters measure speed.

Dive Watches

Dive watches are water-resistant up to a certain depth and often have a rotating bezel that helps divers keep track of their dive times. With the help of modern technology, they have become water-resistant to about 300m!

Racing Watches

Racing watches are suitable for athletes, and feature multiple timers, stopwatches, and alarms.

Field Watches

Field watches are typically simple, rugged, and easy to read in all lighting conditions. They're popular with outdoorsmen and military personnel.

Casual Watches

These watches are perfect for everyday wear, and typically have a more relaxed style. They may include features such as timers or alarms, but they generally lack the complexity of other types of watches.

Luxury Watches

As the name suggests, these watches are high-end luxury items. They often feature intricate designs and expensive materials, such as gold or diamonds. Recently wooden watches have also entered the category of luxury watches owing to their uniqueness and beauty.

Choose the right type of watch

There are many types of watches that have been designed and manufactured throughout history. Some watches are specifically for certain activities or occasions, while others are more versatile. It's important to know the different types of watches available before making a purchase, in order to ensure that you're getting the right one for your needs!
