How to Find True North With Just Your Treehut Wooden Watch

In the age of the smartphone and high speed Internet, watch wearers catch eyes. Analog wood-watch wearers, on the other hand, are a special breed, inspiring conversation and making fast friends. Wood watches say I’m a little bit of an old soul and I also love nature. Fashion statement aside, they can do more than just tell time.  Did you know, for instance, that with an analog watch alone, you are able to find true north?

Ok, so maybe a few buttons on your smartphone can tell you, but what if, like the nature-lover you are, you find yourself lost in the middle of a forest and your phone’s signal cuts out? Then what?

Good news is, if the sun is out and you’re wearing a watch, you’ll find your way home. If you’re wearing a Treehut watch, you’ll be doing it in unmatched style.

anyone in the Southern Hemisphere, check this out.)

All you need:

  • The visible sun
  • An analog watch with the correct time (To account for daylight savings, subtract hour from summer time by moving the hour hand counter clockwise 1 hour.)

1.      When outside where the sun can be seen, remove your watch and lay it flat in your hands. You could also put it on a level surface or on the ground, so long as the watch face parallel to the ground.

2.         While facing your analog watch, align it just so that the hour hand points in the direction of the sun.

3.       To find True North, bisect the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock mark.

The central point of the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock hour marker is the north-south line. Imagine a line starting from the center of the dial, halving the angle between the hour dial and 12 o’clock. This imaginary line will point South.

By extension, the line going the opposite way points to your True North.

Tip: If you find yourself still confused about which way is north or south, remember: no matter where you are, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the sun will be due south by midday.
