If you've been in San Francisco this week in the last 16 years, you might have noticed the streets of downtown closed off to cars and packed full of weirdos. So what could warrant shutting down all business besides bars in this area?
What is the How Weird Street Fair?
Thousands of people from all over the world come to celebrate peace, music, and art. How Weird is a menagerie of attractions, including a world renowned music festival featuring 10 stages of different styles of dance music, an open air art festival filling an expanded Art Alley, a unique market of interesting vendors and delicious food, and a platform for performers of every type.
When and Where?
Located in the SOMA district of San Francisco on Howard and Second street. The fair is from Noon to 8pm.
How much is it?
Its donation based! By donating $20 you receive a magic sticker. The magic of the sticker is the subsequent discounts you'll receive like $2 off alcoholic drinks at the bars, a free healing crystal at the vendor Light Sound Dimensions, or a free answer to a spiritual awakening question.
How to get there?
There are three main entrances:
Howard and 1st Streets
Howard and New Montgomery Streets
Mission and 2nd Streets
What to Wear?
How Weird asks that participants come as themselves decked out in costumes reflecting and exaggerating their unique identity. Participants often paint their bodies and faces, wear masks, wigs, or sometimes nothing at all. ;)
Who Attends?
People from all over the world come. Some people bring pets and wildlife. You'll even see grooving moms and dads with their baby in a sarong wearing noise cancelling headphones.
What to bring?
Bring any flow toys, hula hoops, toroflux (pictured above) or poi flags that you might have. If you don't have any of these, no worries! The vendors will definitely be selling these and more. Just bring your dance moves and some cash for toys and beer. There are ATMs but who wants to pay those outrageous fees?
What type of vendors?
There's food and beer vendors but more importantly, there are lines of tents as far as the eye can see of weird toys and costumes. There are local company's like
San Franpsycho and independent crafters of unusual toys, clothing, jewelry, and more.
What type of Music is at How Weird?
There are 10 different stages of dance music ranging from mellow electro to experimental. The music wont have lyrics just a steady beat to get lost in for hours. Check the
How Weird page for the DJ line up by stage. Or check out the below videos for a taste of one stage.
