You have a beautifully complicated relationship with your mom. There are days when you feel worlds apart. But there is beauty to be appreciated in a healthy amount of conflict, especially because she created you. When all is said and done, you are two humans with different opinions, but who truly want the best for each other.
Next time you find yourself scratching your head and asking who are you, consider ten of the your mom's best kept secrets:
1. She was once just like you.
You remind her of a girl she used to know, because the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. She went through all the same growing pains, fought with her parents, worried about how she would fit into the world, and harbored the same hopes and fears about the future. She’s had her heart broken and her dreams occasionally dashed, but she picked herself many times over again to build a life for herself and you.
2. She really just wants you to be happy.
Your mom may on occasion have some strong advice on how you should lead your life, but at the end of the day, it’s because she’s looking out for your best interest. She might not always agree with your choices, but she’ll be waiting on the other side of the finish line with open arms.
3. She had dreams of world domination.
Just like you, your mom wanted the world (and maybe she still does). She had dreams of travel, seeing the big sights and experiencing every beautiful thing under the sun. She knew she wanted to make a big mark on the world. Little did she know, the whole world appeared right in her arms when you came into her life.
4. She took care of things big and small.
When you weren’t looking, your mom worked behind the scenes to make sure you were taken care of. Think back to those times when you found a surprise sandwich in your backpack, your sink of dishes magically washed and put away, your gas tank full after she borrowed your car for errands.
5. She stayed up all night waiting for you.
She camped out on the living room sofa or slept with one eye open waiting for you to come home. Even when you missed curfew by three hours and she let you slide, you should know you gave her a world of worry. Her mind raced through every possible bad situation and she breathed a happy sigh of relief when she heard you come sneaking in.
6. You make her cry.
Believe it or not, you have more power than you know--remember to use it for good! A mother’s empathy is the fiercest kind. She cried when you had your first fall, when you were sick, and when you suffered your first heartbreak. She cried during your first fight and when you shut her out. But she also sobbed when you took your first steps, graduated from school, and landed your dream job.
7. You’re the love of her life.
Her love for you will always come before love for anything else. She nourished you with everything she had to give, watched you tenderly as you slept at night, witnessed you grow into the person you are today.
8. She knows she’s not perfect.
This might come as a surprise to you, but your mom is her own worst critic. You changed the whole game for her. From the start, she held the weight of the world on her shoulders, understanding that every choice she made even before your birth would impact you. Remember to give her a break.
9. She thinks about you all the time.
She wonders about your happiness, whether you’re eating your fruits and vegetables, whether you’re wearing a seatbelt. Chances are, she’s thinking of you right this moment. Give her a call or plan for a visit!
10. If she could do it all over again, she’d still choose you.
For better and for worst, her bond with you is unbreakable. A lifetime of love and memories went into the connection she shares with you.
