Make It  a Movie Night - What To Watch On Valentine’s Day

Going out on a date for Valentine’s during the height of a global pandemic can be difficult. Thankfully, you can always just curl up on a couch with your significant other/s and call it a movie night.

There certainly is no shortage of rom-coms, tearjerkers, and chick-flicks to watch during V-Day, but having to decide what to watch can often be a headache. If you’re looking for a great movie to watch, here’s our top three picks for a good Valentine’s day movie night - and what’s more, this list has something for everybody.

1. The Notebook (2004)

This sleeper hit  starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams is what every girlfriend has tried to get their boyfriends to watch, with mixed success. Guys may think it’s just a chess-fest but this is a movie with form and substance.

The Notebook is the story of star-crossed lover Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton - different in every respect, both from their outlook, and their social classes. But opposites attract, and if they are together, sparks fly.

Unfortunately, for 1940’s South Carolina, social status means everything, and lumber mill worker Noah had zero chance to nab heiress Allie. They nevertheless pursue their whirlwind romance with abandon, much to Allie’s parents’ displeasure. Finally deciding to bring their puppy love to an end, her parents decide to return to their hometown of Charleston to separate the two lovebirds.

While apart, Noah writes Allie one letter everyday , but unbeknownst to him, Allie’s mother intercepts each one - all 365 letters - and it never reaches her. During the interim that follows, Noah enlists to fight in World War II, and Allie gets engaged to a wealthy Captain named Lon.

What happens next? Watch it and find out. We don’t do spoilers here. Make sure you have a lot of tissue paper though. Because this one is going to be a real tear-jerker

2. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela [lit. ‘A Dance of bullets: Ram Leela’] [2003]

Bollywood might not be everybody’s things. And neither is Shakespeare. But what do those two disparate things have in common? Well, Ram Leela is a Bollywood retelling of the classic Shakespearean play ‘Romeo and Juliet’, only 100-times more opulent and fun!

In the fictional Gujarati village of Ranjhaar where guns and ammunition are the primary source of money, two feuding each other’s necks for the past 500 years. All of this would change when the protagonist Ram [ this movie’s Romeo] meets Leela (the Juliet) on Holi festival, and they fall in love at first sight.

Expect to find all the classic tropes of the original Shakespearean play in Ram-Leela, but with surprisingly poignant, fun and unexpected twists as only Bollywood can deliver.

3. Professor Marston and the Wonder Women [2017]

Back in a day, being a comic book nerd was something people made fun of you for. Today. It’s ‘cool’. But only the most die-hard comic book nerd would know the story of how one of the most popular comic book characters in existence- Wonder Woman- came to be.

This is the story of Professor William Moulton Marston, better known to the rest of the world as Charles Moulton- the man who created Wonder Woman. In this deeply moving, unconventional, but beautiful love story, we find one of the rare positive representations of polyamory on film.

Professor Marston and his wife, Elizabeth, are tenured researchers at the Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges. They’re  working on creating a prototype lie detector test, and there they meet Olive Byrne, a student that they hire to become their research assistant. Their mutual interactions lead all three to fall in love with another, but 1928 America is a different time, such practices were grounds enough for Olive’s expulsion, and the Martsons’ termination.

Elizabeth becomes a typist, while William writes self-help books. Olive keeps all three together by being a homemaker. William later decides to apply his DISC behavior theory and make a comic book based around it. Enter Wonder Woman - his personal homage to the two women of this life, and to his life’s work -the DISC theory. Historical biopics are often considered boring, but not this one. This will make you believe that love is true no matter the form.
