People of Treehut: Know Where You Come From | Best Gift for Groomsmen

Even though we've never met, the next person in our People of Treehut series happens to know our neck of the woods pretty well.

A fellow “Bay Area-repping” native and married father of three kids, Jan Maspaitella now makes a home in the PNW [Pacific Northwest]. He wears many hats as a photographer, camera operator and audio engineer, but is most proudly a “part-time stay-at-home dad who sings to his kids all the time.”

Who gifted you your first Treehut watch, and what were the circumstances behind the gift? Was there a message engraved?

I received my watch from my best friend Ryan, as a groomsman in his wedding. The message on it included my initials (“JCM”), the date and “kindergarten bros”. Ryan and I have been friends for most of our lives. He’s always been there for me and was even in my wedding the previous year. We used to cut school and go to A’s games. We’ve traveled together, played hours of poker, went camping. We even called each other after the Warriors won the championship.

Being in his wedding was an honor. And to receive a gift like that was really awesome. It’s something that, every time I wear it, I remember the day he and Whit [Ryan’s fiance] got married. I’ll also remember that Ryan will be a friend for life. I’m so excited for the next chapter. Now that we both have kids and are going on our first camping trip, I’m stoked to make new memories as parents.

Where has life taken you since the time you received the watch?

I’ve traveled to Indonesia  and all over the US. I’ve photographed probably 20 weddings since being given my watch.

What's your favorite memory?

While wearing my watch, my favorite memory includes the moment I first got it [as a groomsman, from Ryan]. It was such a thoughtful gift and the inscription was a great personal touch.

Who, or what, inspires you?

My grandparents (especially my Oma) came to the U.S. in 1962 and have overcome so much so that my dad would have a future here. Their hard work and determination, love and support, push me to be the best father and husband possible. My community of friends also show me that no matter what is happening in life, they are here to lend a hand. So in return, I am here for them.

What's your happy place? What do you do or where do you go to feel like your best self?

My happy place is being surrounded by my family and friends. I love hanging out and taking photos whether it be with my kids or with my friends or out walking around town.

Words to live by?

“Know where you come from, where you are, and where you are going.”

As a guy with traditional family values, Jan's new watch of choice was none other than our classic Ebony + Walnut 31 wooden watch. And as living testament of his devotion, Jan happened to be wearing it when he dashed on over to witness the birth of his new niece.
