Christmas Traditions Around the World

Christmas Traditions Around the World

Christmas is a big deal. But everyone has their traditions. Check out these unique ways other cultures celebrate this holiday.

Let us know in the comments below what your favorite holiday tradition is!

Italy

On Christmas Day, Babbo Natale (Santa Claus) brings gifts to children but the primary day for present giving is on Epiphany Eve (January 5). During the Feast of Epiphany, an old witch called La Befana traditionally walks through the village streets giving gifts to children, who have put up stockings for her to fill.

Japan

Children receive their Christmas presents on their pillow Christmas night. And a traditional Christmas meal in Japan is fried chicken.

Latin America

Children leave their shoes out for Los Reyes Magos (the Three Wise Men). On the morning of January 6, they find treats, presents, and lollies stuffed in their footwear.

Austria

On December 4th, Barbaratag (St. Barbara’s Day) a small cherry branch is cut off and placed in water.

If the twig blossoms before Christmas Day, this is regarded as good luck and a possible marriage will follow.

Mexico

In Mexico, paper mache sculptures called pinatas are filled with candy and hung from the ceiling. Children take turns hitting the pinata until it breaks, sending a shower of treats to the floor.

The holidays remind us all that time with people we love is essential. Of course, all cultures will appreciate our Tree Hut watches.
